Tech It Out: Women in Technology: Overcoming Workplace Bias

Bias of all kinds affects us in many ways but can be especially influential in the workplace. Join us as we discuss the powerful journeys of our remarkable speakers and how they have overcome bias in the workplace.

Continuing on our mission to impact the young women and men in STEM, we encourage you to bring your young learner (13 ) along to hear stories of resilience. All enrolled students will be entered into a raffle to receive personal coaching from our panelist, Olympic Medalist, Kim Vandenberg.

Each registrant will receive a swag bag. Additionally, those that participate in the conversation will be entered into a raffle for some amazing items!

Meet our Panelists:

 

Beverly Hepworth is a Senior Network Engineer at TAB Bank in Ogden Utah. Her team is comprised of female engineers, Lindsay & Alex. Between the three they each bring a set of skills that mesh.

Prior to joining TAB Bank in addition to a full-time Telecom position,  Beverly taught night classes for 5 years at the Ogden-Weber Technical College where she had graduated with honors. Having been a student brought an understanding of the obstacles and stresses the students faced.

Her philosophy and approach are to educate and empower those around her. Whether it be the ladies in accounting or fellow techies. Overcoming obstacles has been part of her life from a very young age. The people who lifted and mentored her throughout life showed her how.

 

Kim Vandenberg

A California native, Olympic bronze medalist Kimberly Vandenberg specializes in both the butterfly and freestyle. She is a two-time gold medalist from the 2011 Pan American Games in the 200 butterfly and the 4×200 freestyle relay, a silver medalist from the 2007 world championships in the 200 fly, and a three-time national champion in the 200 fly. Since competing in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, she has traveled the world giving motivational talks and teaching swim clinics and private lessons to international schools throughout the United States, Asia, Australia, Europe, and South America. She continues to swim for the New York Athletic Club and is currently pursuing her Master’s Degree in Psychology at Pepperdine University. In addition to her swim instruction, Kimberly offers Vinyasa Yoga classes designed specifically for swimmers as well as mentoring work through Rise Athletes. Kimberly is based in the Pacific Palisades, California.

 

Shirlette Chambers

is a Software Engineer on the Cloud Engineering team where she works to build services that allow Comcast teams to manage their cloud computing resources. She began her engineering career three years ago after transitioning from being a Math teacher. Shirlette has been a guest panelist and speaker at several Comcast events. As a co-lead of Comcast’s BENgineers, she advocates for Black technologists and volunteers with local organizations that support efforts to increase diverse talent in technology careers.

Shirlette is an avid traveler who also possesses a passion for community empowerment through education. Her ultimate goal is to do meaningful and impactful work, bringing forth positive change to others and creating inclusive technology.
